Mas Sorrer captures the charm of the region of Montsant with its steep slopes of old vine Garnacha and Cariñena that has inspired Sara Perez and Rene Barbier, Jr. the same way that Priorat did to their parents 20 years ago. Formerly known as the Fallset subzone of Taragona, Montsant’s 2,000 ha of vineyards were given their own DO in order to highlight their superior quality in 2001. The grand Montsant escarpment that gives this region its name rises majestically over diverse parcels that range from granitic sand around Falset, to compacted calcareous soil, to sites covered in codols (pebbles and larger rounded stones) to slate in others. This soil diversity coupled with the large number of old vines, gives Montsant wines their distinct element of terroir and complexity. Learn More

    Steele Viognier, Lake County

     Vineyards

The unique growing conditions of Lake County provide a few great places to grow Viognier. Our Viognier is a combination of the Fiora Family Vineyard and Dorn Vineyard. The Fiora’s have been growing Viognier grapes for us since 2000. Their vineyard is located on the north side of Lake County at 1500ft just outside of the High Valley appellation. The Dorn family farms several different parcels of land but one that is most intriguing is their home ranch hillside vineyard. This extremely sloped vineyard is nestled on the flanks of Mount Konocti.  This mountain is a dormant volcano that dominates the landscape of the Clear Lake appellation. The high elevation in combination with volcanic soils, warm days and cool nights provided an excellent location to grow Viognier.  Viognier has shown that it requires much attention both in the vineyard and in the winery.

    Winemaking

We ferment the juice in a small stainless steel tank then complete the fermentation in neutral oak barrels. We must pay close attention to this wine. We watch over the barrels and stir them weekly. We evaluate each one for aroma, flavor and color. The wine was lightly filtered and bottled in March to preserve the great Viognier perfume.

    Food Pairing

This wine is unique and has flavors that complement Asian foods especially Thai cuisine.

Wine Spectator 90 "A light, pure and persistent white, with jicama, honeysuckle and talc notes racing along, backed by lingering floral and lemon pulp hints. Drink now through 2015. 600 cases made. –JM" " Silver Thread Vineyard was established in 1982 on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake, at the heart of New York’s Finger Lakes region. At this location the bottom of the lake drops almost 200 feet below sea level, a dramatic mass of water that creates a distinct microclimate on the leeward (eastern) hillside — cooling breezes in summer, radiating warmth through the winter, and extending the length of the growing season. On this hillside 250 years ago the Iroquois people tended huge peach orchards, a testament to this temperate ‘island’ within a cool region. The turtle image on our label was carved in a rock beside one of New York’s woodland creeks by a Native American artist many centuries ago. As an earth symbol to the Iroquois people, the turtle reminds us to care for the land and water that give us the gift of wine. Silver Thread’s seven-acre vineyard and ecologically-designed wine cellar were established by organics enthusiast and author Richard Figiel. Since the late 1980’s, the vineyard has followed the principles of sustainable farming. We use mulch, compost and cover crops instead of chemical fertilizers to provide our vines with a healthy, living soil. This strengthens the link between the wine and its terroir, the special character of its site. Our energy-efficient tasting room and wine cellar building, built in 1995, is set into the hillside for natural temperature control and to take advantage of gravity flow in the winemaking process. Water is also gravity fed to the winery from a spring next to the vineyard. Besides gravity, wind-generated electricity purchased from the grid is our sole source of power. Natural cork, a renewable resource, and lightweight glass bottles are used to reduce the environmental impact of our packaging. Critically-acclaimed winemaker Paul Brock and wine educator Shannon Brock assumed ownership of Silver Thread Vineyard in 2011. Paul Brock has crafted a portfolio of intense and high-quality wines that are already well-received by Finger Lakes wine aficionados. General Manager Shannon Brock, who has been a leader in the hospitality industry in the Finger Lakes for the past several years, is putting her expertise to work to create an outstanding tasting room experience. Silver Thread is staying true to its roots despite new ownership. It remains a boutique winery focused on sustainable viticulture and premium estate wines. Production is currently 2,200 cases per year. Wines are available for sale at the tasting room, via mail order, in select stores and restaurants throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Silver Thread’s vineyard, wine cellar and tasting room are located ¾ mile off Route 414 (the wine trail) in a quiet and naturally beautiful environment. The vineyard and tasting room overlook Seneca Lake. Well-educated and relatively serious wine buyers who care about local and sustainable products will enjoy discovering our off-the-beaten-path location and expressive wines that reflect the terroir of the Finger Lakes.
