There is plenty of expressiveness in the glass, even if the wine loses some of its persistence on the mid-palate and finish. The Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino displays geep garnet color with full and penetrating aromas of wild berries. The palate is dry, warm full-bodied while harmonious, delicate and austere at the same time, persistent. Critical Acclaim RP91 The Wine Advocate - "The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is one of those wines that seemingly benefitted from the warm vintage. The style is rich and opulent and there is enough layered oak spice and tannin to support the softer nature of the fruit. Ripe cherry, blackberry and dark plum abound. My only note of hesitation is sparked by the mouthfeel that is slightly thinner and shorter than past vintages. This Brunello is aged in a combination of botte grande and smaller oak barrel. The wine is fleshed out, approachable and almost ready to drink now." TP91 Tasting Panel - "Smooth, ripe and juicy with soft, rich flavors of plum, ripe berries and spice; dense, deep and balanced, long and lush. Sangiovese Grosso." JS90 James Suckling - "This is a little lean but shows pretty berry, prune and cocoa character. Full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Needs a year or two to soften." Learn More

Established in 1893, Stags’ Leap Winery is one of the oldest wine estates within the acclaimed Stags Leap district, continually producing wines expressive of its unique terroir. With an enduring wine making philosophy of minimal intervention, and by using the finest grapes from our own 85-acre vineyard and from quality-focused growers, Stags’ Leap wines embody a natural balance, exhibiting both intensity and finesse. A dry winter gave way to rains in early spring, and temperate weather at the time of bud break brought little in the way of frost damage. Flowering and fruit set were facilitated by dry weather in late spring, and a relatively moderate summer gave the fruit ample time to ripen slowly to its full potential. There was a brief rain event in early/mid-October, but by that time the vast majority of the grapes were safely in the winery. “Its beauty is in the variety of sourcing,” says Winemaker Christophe Paubert of his Napa Valley Petite Sirah. Grapes from our 30-year old estate vines form the backbone of this wine. Paubert likes to add grapes from both northern and southern Napa Valley vineyards to intensify and broaden the wine’s profile to include floral, spice and fruit characteristics. The Petite Sirah was made using the same time-honored techniques that have made this wine practically synonymous with Stags’ Leap Winery. Avoiding over extraction, Paubert allowed the wine to go through a relatively short maceration period (9 days on average) following fermentation. He then aged the wine for 14 months in American oak barrels (25% new), the spiciness of the oak complementing the natural spice character of the varietal. The final blend includes small amounts of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, Rhone varietals that bring further complexity to the finished wine. With a triumvirate of fruit, floral and spicy characteristics, this warm, juicy wine opens with black cherry, blueberry and strawberry flavors supported by distinct notes of vanilla, violets and spice. The powerful red and black fruit flavors persist on the palate, backed by refined tannins and balancing acidity. Bold yet restrained, this wine displays the plush elegance for which our signature Petite Sirah is known. Learn More

I tasted the following wines with Charles Van Canneyt, Alain Hudelot's grandson. Van Canneyt showedme a few 2008s before moving into the 2009s. The estate did some chaptalization in 2008. Based on the selection of wines I tasted, that may have robbed some of the 2008s of their vintage character. Vintage 2009 seems to have played more to the estate's strengths. Juicy and packed with cherry, black currant, violet, licorice and spice flavors, riding a wave of vibrant acidity. Tannins lend support, allowing this to cruise to a long aftertaste, courtesy of the driving acidity. Best from 2018 through 2032. 567 cases made. –BS

    2009 Chateau Malartic Lagraviere Pessac-Léognan

    $106.00

    Size 750ML

Packed and very backward, with taut tobacco, iron and bittersweet cocoa notes up front, while the core of crushed plum, roasted fig and cassis flavors is held in reserve. Lots of chalky grip marks the finish, where the fruit drips in the background. Best from 2015 through 2022. 7,500 cases made. –JM Learn More
  50. 2009 Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia Ornellaia

    2009 Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia Ornellaia

    $109.00

    Size 375ML

The 2009 Ornellaia caresses the palate with layers of seamless, radiant fruit. Sweet red berries, mocha, flowers, new leather and spices are some of the many notes that are layered in this sumptuous, totally beautiful wine. The 2009 stands out for its silky tannins and phenomenal overall balance. This is one of those wines that will probably enjoy a long drinking window. In one of my blind tastings, the 2009 made a very eloquent case for itself as the wine of the vintage. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. In 2009 winemaker Axel Heinz used the highest percentage of Cabernet Franc ever in Ornellaia and gave the wine less time in oak, both with the goal of preserving as much freshness as possible. 97 points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate Learn More
