When a document from 600 AD was discovered about a wine that came from their region that was made for the Pope and the highest dignitaries of the church, Claudio decided to resurrect the wine. He named the wine Suffagium, a latin word meaning voting tablet or ballot and is also the name of a nearby church where an organization of people meet who work to preserve traditional practices of their culture and land. The wine in the 1,400 year old document depicted something almost in the style of ripasso from neighboring Veneto; made from several grapes and refermented on grape skins. After years of making and refining the style Claudio eventually decided that no matter how you make it, it was just plain terrible. Today, the wine is 100% Vernaccia Rossa di Pergola (not related to Vernaccia Nera ) and luckily doesnt taste anything like the wine that inspired its creation. Instead the wine has light, yet complex aromatics, that almost resembles that of Aleatico but without the funk. Aged 8-10 months in used barrique
